The collection TAILINGS explores the deep-rooted personal topic of my adoption.
Examining this intensely intimate subject allowed me to create this cathartic nine look collection.
The word tailings itself refers to the byproduct left behind after extracting precious stones and minerals from a mine. This product left behind refers to both the history of colombian mining and the countries infamous problem of anti-contraception and subsequent unwanted children.
This project allowed me to travel back in time, back to my birth and early month. The concept of ´the journey´has been very important in the creation of this collection. This is seen throuhout the collection, from the aviator hats to the oversized leather backpacks and seemingly multifunctional outerwear. The notion of function and durability is combined with dramatic draping and deconstructed garments. Weight and texture play an important role in the collection too. Leather, felted wool, mohair and waxed canvas have been carefully selected for their unique luminosity and feel. Combined together with oversized proportions these materials add elements of luxury to their effectively functional appearance.
